Hi all,

I just upgraded my kernel from 2.6.14xxx to 2.6.17xxx (using YUM) with
disastrous results. With the default runlevel set to 5, X fails and I'm
left with just a blank screen and a big black 'X' as a pointer. When I
default to runlevel 3 and 'startx' the desktop starts but something is
definitely not right in there b/c it takes around 5 minutes to start up.
Interestingly enough, I also noticed that when I did it that way, I
couldn't use the internet. I could connect, but then when I started the
browser it pretended there was no connection (same for Evolution).

Any ideas what could be causing this, or what info I should gather to
troubleshoot the problem?

While I'm here, I noticed while I was playing in the command line that
when I login using text, it gives errors:

Keymap 0: Permission Denied
Keymap 1: Permission Denied
Keymap 2: Permission Denied
KDSKBENT: Operation not permitted
loadkeys: could not deallocate Keymap 3

I gather that it's having trouble choosing a keyboard layout (?) or
whatever but I've no idea how to fix it as I've never seen that error
before. (it's been I while since I manually started X, so I guess the
problem could've been there for ages and I just haven't been aware of
it)

Also, (I know, it's turning into a long post :P) in startup, I'm getting
an error when starting Logical Volume Management: Incorrect metadata
header checksum (off the top of my head). *And* there's an awful lot of
text flying past the screen during startup, so I was wondering; is there
a log file or something that I could look at to try to figure out what
the problems are during startup?

I'm not sure how it happened (probably because I spend all my time in
KDE and no time at all in the terminal :D) but suddenly my system seems
to have a sh!tload of problems that I didn't know about. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Oh, almost forgot.... FYI:

Fedora Core 4 (2.6.14xxx - 2.6.17xxx)
KDE 3.5.2xxx
Pentium 4 - 2.6GHz
Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra (never had any probs with this card...
installed Nvidia drivers once. have clean installed since then and
never bothered to install drivers again)
I doubt that it matters in this instance but there's bucketloads of RAM
and swap.

thanks for bearing with me guys,
arsenic.
