OK.  The file is probably not called syslog, but it's some kind of log
in that directory or one of the subdirectories.  The thing is that I
don't know which system logger you're using, so I can't say specifically
what the file would be called.

I just realized part of the problem.  When you boot to a graphical
login, you're not booting into X.  You're booting into something like
GDM or XDM or some other display manager.  When you login there, it
starts X for you.  When you log in via a text login, you work around
that software.  Therein lies your problem.  I still don't know why it's
hanging up, but that's at least what is hanging up.

The internet connection can be a litany of things.  What does ifconfig
tell you when run as root?  Is the hardware not being detected?  What
adapter are you using?
