OK, so now I'm feeling really bloody stupid. I looked in the logs (that
I could find... there is no syslog in /var/log, or am I just missing
something that's painfully obvious here?) and I couldn't see anything.
I mean, I'm not a whiz when it comes to reading such things, so maybe I
just don't know what I'm supposed to look for but there was nothing in
there that leapt out at me and said "this isn't working". It's
frustrating me... I'm sure there must be some way to pin down exactly
where sh!t is going wrong but I don't know how.

Is there maybe something I could differently in startup, some option I
could use to get the computer to tell me, very loudly, exactly what's
going on when it starts?

Oh, the keymap thing, I read about and frankly, I'm happy to ignore it
coz it doesn't really affect my ability to use the computer but this x
thing is really starting to irritate me, along with the fact that I
can't access the net when i boot from the new kernel (and I'm no closer
to knowing why).

It just doesn't seem to make any sense... I set default runlevel to 5
and reboot - I choose the new kernel and all I get is a big X in the
middle of a blank screen... I set the default runlevel to 3 and reboot -
choose the new kernel, start x manually and it works and I can initiate
the internet connection but then i can't do anything with it, even as
root.

X works, obviously... but for some reason it doesn't work when it tries
to start itself. Maybe someone could tell me more specifically where to
look for that problem? Like give me a general area of a log file that i
should pay particular attention to or something? I know, that's
probably not going to happen but I'm just grasping at straws now. I
really am starting to tear my hair out over this. I like to be able to
work things out for myself but it just isn't happening this time. I'm
completely lost.

Well, most of this post seems to have been just me complaining that I
don't know anything but since I feel like I should give some sort of
response to your attempt to help - there it is. :P Maybe I should just
wait for the next kernel to come out and hope that that one works. I
hate to admit it, but this sort of thing almost makes me want to go back
to MS Windows.... almost. hmm... having said that, sometimes I find
myself wondering why the hell I stopped using Windows in the first
place...

Anyway, cheers for your responses. I do appreciate that you tried to
help.
About to give up on Linux.
