You're connecting the two together directly? For that you'd need a crossover cable not a straight through network cable.
Better though (well, cooler anyway) would be to get a cheap little router like the SMC I have. It supports DHCP so it'll assign IP addresses to the systems so you don't have to think about it. Plus it has wireless support. Buy.com has one without wireless for less than $50. That said any cheap hub/switch/router will work if you're okay with setting up the IP addresses.
