You need to partition your hard drive to create a minimum of two partitions, one for each OS. The last OS installed will write to the MBR of the harddrive giving you a menu which allows you to select which OS to boot. It will boot to the last OS by default unless you press a key. If you want to change the boot order then you can either edit the menu.lst file manually or you can do it from within the OS that you want to boot as first choice. Let's say you install Ubuntu first and Debian second, then Debian will set it up as the OS that boots by default. You can switch the order by editing the menu.list file on the Debian partition located at /boot/grub. You need root privileges to do this. A simple cut and paste will suffice. Or you can boot to Ubuntu and have it rewrite the bootloader which will set itself up as the default OS. I am using Kubuntu now so I can tell you where to do this in KDE. It is called Startup-Manager and it is found in the System submenu.
A better choice for novices may be to have separate hard drives for each OS, if you have a spare drive and are not squeamish about playing with the inside your computer. In this case, you will need to choose your first drive as the drive to write the bootloader on, usually hd0, which is usually the default setting anyway. I hope that this is not to confusing. It isn't too daunting. Most distros have built in partition managers available at installation. Ubuntu's is very good.
