This is tree of most common distros. Ubuntu is a fork from Debian. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE desktop instead of Gnome. Fedora is a fork from Red Hat. The Red Hat fork uses a different package management from Debian. This is the main difference. There are others such as different installers. Ubuntu and the rest of its family (Kubuntu, Fluxbuntu, Xubuntu, etc.) uses a live installation disk. Fedora does not. RPM vs. Debian package management systems are a matter of personal preference. However there are many thousands more packages for Debian and Ubuntu than for any RPM distro. Ubuntu started as a desktop distro but they are making inroads into the server market. Good RPM distros to consider are: PCLinuxOS (Mandriva fork, desktop use, KDE or Gnome) and SUSE (Novell owned, KDE or Gnome, Open source version, Desktop and Enterprise). Good Debian ones to consider are: SimplyMEPIS (Debian core, great hardware detection, KDE or Fluxbox), Freespire (Ubuntu core, CNR package management, modified KDE), Linux Mint (Ubuntu fork) Other choices are: Gentoo (compile from source most packages), Slackware (oldest), Sabayon (Gentoo fork) There are lots more.
