At present, that is still probably the case. Although distros like
Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS (to name only two, there are many others) have made
enormous strides and raised the bar so to speak, for people who simply
don't want to hassle with Windows, it's a long way from being a drop in
replacement. Linx people forget the adage, "Promise less than you can
deliver and deliver more than you promise." When you tell people, here,
use this, it's a drop in for Windows, and they find that so many things
don't work, they don't WANT to go google for the answer.

At present, wireless, sound and webcams can be problematic, though not
always, and the Linux developers work quite hard to keep up.

I bought a laptop and it took me a few days and a lot of googling to get
sound wireless and the webcam working. In the hope of saving others the
problem I've put up my own page about it so I like to think I'm part of
the solution. None of it was difficult--it was finding the information
that was difficult.

Your later posts indicate that you did get sound working. It really
depends how much the challenge intrigues you, etc. etc.

FWIW (For what it's worth) I started my IT career as an MS guy.
However, the more I worked with Linux, the more I liked it, and my
current job is almost all Linux. (Actually I prefer FreeBSD, but
nothing's perfect.) :) It's still more for the people to whom the
computer is an end in itself, rather than the means to an end.

However, it's getting there.
