Which is the best Linux distro that "just works" without a lot of
hassle?

I recommend Ubuntu 8,04.
Ubunut is a good starting point for Linux newbies as for most it will
work 'out of the box'.
Once familiar with Ubuntu's Linux people can then venture into the wider
world of Linux and experiment with various distros to find those that
best suit their work and machine.
Windoze is a 'one size fits all' OS, whereas Linux distros tends to be
more individual and thus may suit some people and some machines better
than others.
Ubuntu documentation, help, and forums offer better support than most of
the others distros.
Therefore I suggest you start with Ubuntu and then experiemnt with other
variants.
personally, I favour dual booting rather than using VM or wuibi, it's
just a personal thing.
