You could also try Kaffein, which is another front end for Xine, which I have 
found to work when the Xine GUI fails. It should be installed by default if 
you have KDE installed.

You will need to install libdvdcss to get it to play encrypted DVDs.

But I also agree that vlc is a better option anyway, and the latest release 
looks awesome too!!
