I'm not 100% certain about Ubuntu, but I'm pretty sure you would set up a network printer in Samba instead of cups.

I bought a D-Link server and got it working with my main Windows XP machine. Next I tried to get it working on my laptop running Ubuntu 8.04 and I am stumped. Can anybody help or point me to some documentation. I tried the printer setup in Gnome, but I did not get that to work. Maybe I should try cups??
