There do seem to be issues with using the /AutoPPP/ and related options
-

According to the mgetty FAQ include with mgetty 1.1.19 src, the
un-patched pppd code is broken - if you use /AutoPPP/ login and then
"who" to see who is logged in, you'll see "/AutoPPP/" or "a_ppp"... or
nothing at all... or the connect may fail altogether.. depending on how
you set the /AutoPPP/ options in /etc/mgetty.login. The options will
not work as documented. Related problem also prevents various other
stuff working when using the pppd "login" authentication option.

I have had a look for a patched version of pppd with no luck (the pppd v
2.3.5 that comes with RH 5.2 seems to suffer from all the above
problems. It should still work OK so long as everything is kept to
mgetty defaults, but more sophisticated stuff will not work as you'd
expect from reading the man/docs.

For example - you would not be able to keep stats for individual users
who login using PAP!

Apparently there are patched versions around - Anyone know where we can
get a patched version of pppd to properly register pap authenticated
users in utmp - and to work with Linuxconf/RH?

Cheers,

R.
