minicom is fine for testing puposes,
why don't you try using wvdial.
it detects your modem automatically,

Am learning my way around Linux (getting quite fond of it too !!) =
and want to connect to the Internet. I have a US Robotics 56K Message =
Modem which works fine in the Window 98 partition and the NT partition. =
Linux does not seem able to sense the modem. Minicom just hangs before =
it gets to the "OK" !!=20

Could it be that this modem too is a "winmodem" ? ( I have been =
searching the Net and cannot find anything that says the Message series =
will *not* work with Linux) Is there any workaround for this ? Or do I =
have to invest in another modem? :-(
