I think we need to introduce another term here ..
"Put Technology".
Mails are that :)

Push is something which you actually request for .. and you know it's
coming, but not exactly sure of the contents (very loosely speaking).

In that sense, mailing lists may be thought of as implementation of push
technology.
You subscribe to them.

You don't subscribe to the normal mails you receive.
