I don't know. What should I look for?

Well, when I installed Kubuntu I didn't face this problem. The computer used
to boot without the all_generic_ide parameter. Then randomly one day it
decided it would not find the root file system and would go to the initramfs
prompt (Error: waiting for root file-system). I searched and found a link in
Launchpad which said that this was due to a bug! Well the workaround was to
add all_generic_ide to the kernel line.
Everything works pretty well on my computer right now but I am not quite
satisfied with the throughput of my hard disks since I have added this
option.
Kaffeine works fine. No problem with video playback whatsoever.

What exactly is happening when I add this all_generic_ide parameter? Should
I compile a new kernel or something?

Regards,
Amit.
