There is one more thing that I noticed. Canonical showcased Ubuntu TV at
CES on a Samsung Smart TV. So, it might just be possible that this might
end up being like the desktop market:

Install Ubuntu TV alongside the default OS of the new Smart TV that you
have.

OR

Install Ubuntu TV on something like a Raspberry Pi Model B (because it has
an ethernet port) and connect this board to the HDMI port on the TV that
you already own (read: non-Smart TV).
Note: Currently there is an issue due to which a Raspberry Pi board cannot
run Ubuntu. It currently runs Debian, Fedora and ArchLinux only. But that
is different matter altogether.

Of course, in either case, this DIY system will need a lot of technical
know-how.
