I had the screen replaced about 4 months ago, and the new one tends to "flicker" on and off (I think it's just the backlight flickering, but it's hard to tell). The problem seems temperature-sensitive, as it happens when the machine is first powered on and then disappears as it warms up. It definitely started after the replacement, so it could be anything from a loose connection to a flaky power transistor somewhere in the backlight circuit. It's unlikely to be in the video stuff on the mainboard. This doesn't help you, but if we turn out to have the same problem, it's possible it's a manufacturing defect that we could whine about. There really isn't anything you can do but either (1) get the screen replaced by HP (the 1920x1200 screen replacement cost me $650 and took 4 days) or (2) open up the case and look for a broken connection somewhere.
