I am sure it will work. I can gurantee that USB 2.0 drives work b/c I have a
250GB drive that I am using now. Why don't u go for a firewire/USB2.0 drive
that way, u can't go wrong and can swap anytime. The prices for these has
gone down by a lot.

Subject: [LinuxR3000] Firewire support?
I'm planning on getting an external harddrive (another 2.5") because I've
used up all my 80GB. Anyways, I'm curious as to if firewire is working on
these laptops (mines an r3190us), because I have nothing really to test
with and don't want to end up with a firewire drive that doesn't work. Oh
the reason for going with firewire is because I could use two drives, one
firewire and one usb2.0 to use up all the bandwidth available =-).
Cheers,
Vadim
