hmmm.  my memory of working with gentoo a year or two ago must be
spotty.  I thought I recalled the default install to setup runlevels
with text names and the install manual said you can make any number you
want with any names you want.

ah, this is it.  I forgot that the names were just labels for the numbers.

So then have we concluded that Gentoo uses runlevel 3 as the default
like Fedora/Suse or is it different?

do Fedora/Suse still start xwindows from inittab?  Debian starts
xdm/kdm/gdm as services within runlevels (sorta all at the same time).
Gentoo goes even further and has 1 service for xdm/kdm/gdm.  The proper
one is started by that service based on settings.
