Fry's that they just had.

If so be aware that the motherboard is not out of the box compatible
with the Q9550 processor.

For the core of your question. I honestly don't know. I have used the
Ubuntu KDE default and "liked" it for what it was worth but even with
my mac I am a minimalist preferring command line tools rather than the
flashy styles. I follow this trend regardless of the OS I am using.  I
would, since you are running a newer distro install both disk space is
pretty cheap and your 500GB hard drives won't feel more than a small
pinch.

KDE for changes things but I am not ready to say that Gnome is better
either.  This may be the best time for you to try them both out and
compare what you like and do not like.  I also would not discount the
lightweight WM's but I also do not have any that I can recommend.
