I've been using Ubuntu as my main desktop for the past year now and
can say that it really works well right after install.  If you want
the codecs and extra stuff you can add the mediabuntu repository and
get everything you need.  The part I like the best is that I don't
have to muck around with it much and can just start using it.  For a
daily workstation I'm done with compiling software every time I want a
new feature *cough* gentoo *cough*.  I've gone back and forth between
KDE and Gnome throughout the years, but have settled on Gnome for now.
 It seems lighter weight and does all that I need it to while still
providing a lot of cool features.
