If Fry's sold a combo that wouldn't work out of the box, they put
themselves in a bad place. If that happens to me I'd simply stop
payment on my CC until their service department did the flash at no
charge. Really...

But it looks like I may be okay... I paid $158 for the board/Q8200 combo
which looks like it's going to work for me. Quad Core 2.33 is going to
be fast enough for me <smile>.

Also I forgot to add my video card: e-GeForce 7200GS, 256 MB. I'm not
sure I really need it, but it's free ($45.00 less $45.00 rebate).

Do you use KDE3 or KDE4? KDE3 is being left behind, and KDE4 is really
completely different; a lot of bad press.

I'm looking seriously at Ubuntu as a switch from the Mandriva I've been
used to. The key for me is I'm a user. Without getting into arguments
about free as in speech, I really need all those codecs, etc.,
seamlessly installed. Does Ubuntu do that? Mandriva does if I buy the
"Cooker" and I've even considered the commercial Novell desktop; it's
$100 per year, and comes with (as many of us know, and some of us hate)
almost everything MS compatible.

Anyway... any other ideas, anyone?

I'm leaving for lunch, and when I get back I can get started on building
the machine <smile>.
