One thing to keep in mind is that part time students, especially at the front end of community-college-like-circumstances don't need a lot of impetus to wash out.
If it hadn't been Ubuntu it would have been something else. Car trouble, job schedule, significant other stress, classes are too hard, teacher is a jerk, etc. Public libraries these days have computers usually. Friends have computers. Parents have computers. People throw away computers when they upgrade. She obviously didn't try that hard. Geeks in my experience trip over themselves to help just about any girl that asks for it. But the Dell rep certainly didn't do here any service by saying she should stick with Ubuntu when she didn't know what it was.
