if you are a beginner I would highly recommend ubuntu for this machine. It is geared for all levels of users. There is also a very large support system out there if you get stuck (ie. ubuntuforums). You might even like the 64bit version of ubuntu. 64bit seems faster IMO. If you dont feel like doing things twice, in case 64bit is not for you, go with the 32bit version.
I agree with Chris Louden, I would up the ram. If increasing the ram is not an option when selecting the laptop, you can always purchase ram after. Sometimes it is cheaper that way. I would recommend at least 2 gb, but 1gb (and even 512) will work fine. You will just have more fun with more ram. Here is a full featured howto that will get you through most of (if not all of) what you will need for a desktop: http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8.10 Assuming you are planing on using the newest version of ubuntu. I am current using both 8.04 and 8.10. If Hardy is what you want, here is a howto: http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8.04-lts-hardy-heron Side note: after installing ubuntu, go to youtube and try to watch a movie, it will tell you a plugin is needed, it will give you options for the different plugins you can install, I recommend the adobe flash player. When try to open an avi movie file, it may say something similar. Just install the plugins required, it will tell you your options. Chris...
