If you do go with ubuntu, you will notice on these howtos that there are a lot
of
media players to choose from. The other categories, like internet should be no
problem, since firefox comes with the installation, and having fewer
choices will be easy to overview and select. But for sound and video, I might
recommend MPlayer, which you will need to install: sudo apt-get install mplayer
which will probably provide all you need for media players at first anyways.
You will need to get the codecs and libraries from the Medibuntu repositories,
which is explained on this link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

You may want a sound recorder of which audacity is a good choice,
since it, I believe, has more features/capabilities than the installation sound
recorder.

Brasero, the install cd burner, is great, and will probably suffice for most
needs
in the beginning.

beyond that, you can select from the choices as needs arise in the future
