For work, most of the computers are Gentoo, with a few CentOS installs.
Gentoo = total control over the environment, and its pretty easy to select
the versions and apps you want.
CentOS = php hell, A: ver 5.3 very new, B: ver 5.1 very old.
If you dont use external repos, you get a very old php version, if you turn
on experimental, you get very new php which breaks somethings.

As for mysql on centos vs gentoo, I think both use the same version...
