I'm thinking mostly of using:
Debian
CentOS
Gentoo
Debian is a great choice. Although it isn't bleeding edge
CentOS has the longest support cycle. 5 years. Ubuntu LTS is 3 year.
Gentoo is another good choice but it is pretty hard core.
I remember that CentOS had a serious problem with their developers.
I don't want a distro that will fall to the wayside.
What I need to determine is what distro I should go with for the long
term. I want something that I can get familiar with so that I can
develop
an understanding for how to secure it for use on the internet as a
production
box.
Locking down a box is the same generally speaking on any distro.
What's different are the tools used. All I can recommend is picking
the set that works for you whichever feels comfortable. Which is to
say debian based, rehat based or source based.
Something that I won't to pay for is pretty much a necessity.
So it will have to be something that will have really good community
support.
If anyone has suggestions or comments, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Paul
