Paul,

One suggestion is that you build a machine capable of running at least 2-3
virtual machines so you can play with distros all day long, that's what we
do in our labs... machines capable of running VMs are fairly cheap, it's
just RAM intensive then you can install X,Y,Z and play with them till you
like them.
