Ubuntu's repos are perhasp "better" for newer stuff (and ease of use). Not sure why Chris likes CentOS, but I used it in productionin some enterprise environments (and "liked it") because of its compatibility with RHEL products (and not wanting to pay RHEL licensing). In the case of older packages, that never really mattered to what I was doing. I got most everything I needed out of the DAG repository. That said, I don't think that arguing about Joe's distro choice really helps him figure out his problem. Haven't looked at everyone else's answer, but I would definitely encourage Joe to look at Ubuntu 10.04. There is likely a nicely organized dpkg that makes his life easier.
