John,
Not sure why the USB stick has faster downloads in the router. My guess is
that there is something funky about the TCP stack in Windows.
I found the opposite to be true for Clearwire. Dongle is a horrible
experience, the modem has no noticeable performance difference from DSL.
Also, I paid about $79 for the Cradlepoint from Best Buy. The USB stick by LG
was the $100 after rebate.
Cradlepoint is nice. I'm rocking pfSense and been happy with it. Did
extensive testing with Cradlepoint on my last contract.
Chuck Daddy "Wy-Fy",
Clearwire may seem to work now in certain areas (Austin, Seattle, certain areas
in SoCal, etc), but if they really want to grow to that next level (and do it
fast), then they will need to switch to LTE
I look forward to the continued evolution of the wireless first square
mile. I had a vigorous debate during SXSW with someone from the
$LARGE_TELCO_THAT_I_HATE_THE_LEAST about fiber vs wireless as a
sustainable technology for investment over the next 15 to 20 years. We
agreed to disagree. It was highly amusing to everyone at the dinner
table. I positioned that wireless is the up and to the right technology
to invest in, he says fiber. *shrugs* We'll have to meet in 20 years to
settle the bet :)
I'm very happy with Clearwire in Austin and in Los Angeles.
It's a volume based business and LTE will be the way to get there. I
applaud Verizons LTE efforts and native v6 support. This is WIN.
Dino,
Troll on about Sprint / Clearmax's WiMAX strategy. They've now got old Wimax
basestations, along with LTE (in the future). I think they were stuck with
WiMAX due to their relationship with Intel (who is a big WiMAX supporter). If
I remember right, when they were no longer using Intel's money, they got smart
and started rethinking their dependence on WiMAX and possibly switching to LTE.
LTE = WIN. This is true. What remains to be seen is if wireless or fiber
is the up and to the right solution.
