It seems to me that we're letting the "open-source" developers of Ubuntu lord Unity over our heads as the next "great" desktop that everybody has to migrate to instead of using and promoting what actually works well. Why the developers of the Ubuntu desktop throw away a mature desktop like gnome 3 and adopt this hack called "Unity" (desktop peoples of the world, unite) is beyond me. This "piece of trash" should have never been promoted as the prime desktop into Ubuntu, but then again, Ubuntu should have never been able to poorly "rip-off" Debian the way that they did. At least, there's a popular operating system out there that's keeping the novices (and their questions) at bay . . .

Don't get me started on Ubuntu Precise. This "beta-ware" version numbered 12.04 was horrible to upgrade to . . . Squid went from 2.x to 3, samba does not support winbind integration with AD, but insists on LDAP integration, and SNMPD is broken beyond belief. If you are one of the unfortunate souls to be running anything but "server", then you are stuck with a resource pig of a desktop that is, at best, limited. Python 2.6 got ditched, which means that tools like ZenOSS won't compile and run correctly without major source code modifications, and 12.10 will ditch python 2.x all together and just go to 3. In short, if you enjoy beta-ware and countless hours of source-code hacking, you might enjoy Ubuntu 12.04.

I prefer installing a system that works "out-of-the-box" (such as linux mint) than letting Ubuntu take all of my valuable time resolving stupid issues that will just be runned-over in the next release with something more cumbersome and obscure.

Why settle for Ubuntu when LinuxMint works so good (http://linuxmint.com/ ). The main release is based on the current Ubuntu release, they have an awesome KDE variant, and my favorite, Linux Mint Debian Edition, is based on Debian (testing). I'm getting use (and kinda liking) Gnome 3. But for
those that like the seasoned desktops, try "MATE" or "Cinnamon".

For the adventurous in the crowd, check out Calculate Linux
(http://calculate-linux.org/), a well thought distribution based off of Gentoo Linux. If you don't mind the Cyrillic Russian comments in the source
code, this distribution has many good ideas (redmine website, disk
partitioning and formatting, etc.).

Both distributions (my primary requirement) recognize ALL of my hardware and
run the latest version of VirtualBox.

Just my two cents worth,

Steve

Ive been installing gnome-panel on the 12.04 desktops I have. I have
upgraded from Lubuntu 10.04 (twice) to Lubuntu 12.04 without issues.
Lubuntu 12.04 has also fixed some issues with (i.e., wiimote drivers
work again) on my HTPC.

Did not like Unity. I don't know if it was just me but did the drop down for the HUD and typed term/terminal/xterm and a terminal app didn't show
up,
so that was it. Went with XFCE on the desktop and customized the panels
to
my liking.

Subject: Re: [LinuxUsers] Ubuntu 12.04

I (attempted) to move a few desktops over to 12.04 this weekend.
Biggest Complaint: Unity is TERRIBLE; I really tried to embrace it.
There are some cool things but being dropped right into that world
from Gnome2 is a roller coaster ride. Gnome shell is not perfect
either. Still trying to figure out things. Overall, the experience
was very buggy.

I have Ubuntu-12.04 in a couple virtual machines - testing only,
not in production.

In 12.04, Ubuntu has upgraded to MySQL-5.5, and does not have
MySQL-GUI-Tools (Administrator & Query Browser - EOL), so either I
accustom to MySQL-Workbench, which so conveniently is available
in universe/database, or I see how feasible it is to work around
compile issues in MySQL-GUI-Tools against MySQL-5.5 .
