I don't know if you're being rhetorical or not; there are discussions of what 
they did and how they did it, published on the 'net.  I found them hard to 
follow when I first read them so I won't look for them now, but they did have 
reasons, no matter how we 'unwashed masses' see it.

My recollection is that having the same look and feel across all platforms was 
important to them; one look on phones, tablets, laptops, desktops.

Like Microsoft is doing with W8 (yes 'W8', as in 'I gave up on Microsoft; 
that's a big W8 off my shoulders').
