welcome to LUG.yes, learning Linux is great.. LPIC L1 is basically command line, setup and network connectivity only. It's not package based.. so, I would suggest you to use fedora 8 or 9 if you have high bandwidth and big space to manage..
or just get ubuntu delivered at ubuntu website if u can wait or just download straight. these distributions can be both setup in desktop environment.
