welcome to LUG.yes, learning Linux is great..
LPIC L1 is basically command line, setup and network connectivity only.
It's not package based.. so, I would suggest you to use fedora 8 or 9 if you
have high bandwidth and big space to manage..

or just get ubuntu delivered at ubuntu website if u can wait or just
download straight.

these distributions can be both setup in desktop environment.
I am not sure how the exam will be asked, but configureX is not really
practical, maybe 10 years ago, Yes..

however, you need command line and scripting to pass that course.

just like i was taught, when u want to learn linux, man is your best friend.

man command to find the details about each manual entry in your shell.
