Your choice of distributions all depends on your computer, how you use
it, and what you expect to put in/get out of it. You seem to be new
to linux, so I would suggest (as many others have already) that you
start with Ubuntu or a derivative such as Kubuntu or Xubuntu. Just to
differentiate, all of these are basically the same OS, the difference
lies in the desktop environment. Ubuntu is based on gnome, Kubuntu is
based on KDE, and Xubuntu is based on xfce. You may want to start by
checking out the respective websites for these desktops and see what
you like. I prefer xfce just because I don't need anything fancy and
it runs a bit quicker than KDE or gnome.

The Ubuntu family of os's are also a nice choice because of the wide
variety of packages (software programs) you can get that are updated
often and ready to use without configuration. The only mark I have
against ubuntu is it's apparent lack of true security, i.e. you have
you use the sudo (better yet, pseudo?) command to run the command as
root. You do not actually become root user in ubuntu. It probably
won't really matter to you, though.

Try the live cd and if you don't like it try something else. Fedora
and openSUSE are also nice choices. Good luck.
