Red Hat is still "free", there is nothing there that will deactivate, limit, or otherwise detract from your OS if you don't pay - unlike some other vendor's products I could mention.
It's just nice to pay into a service which gets you on-the-phone tech support by some of the best Linux gurus around (Red Hat certification is brutal beyond compare from what I hear), plus access to vetted, secure update repositories, which only house packages thoroughly tested to be stable and 100% compatible with your system. It's a little walled garden you can buy if having that kind of service is what you want. Depending on what you're doing with your Linux you could call it a luxury or a necessity.
