I've actually been using linux "on and off" for years. I don't profess
to know about as much about it as I do windows and dos, but I know
enough to be productive when I use it. I have 6 softmodded xboxes
running xbox damn small linux :)
You should be able to start creating simple xwindows apps and useful
utils right away using the linux Rapid-Q compiler. Rapid-Q is very VB-
like and available on Windows also. Or at least you can try it. It was
abandoned before finished. I have used it on my xboxes and created a
few basic windowed apps. It isn't a long-term solution, but it's a
good place for me to start. I feel like I'll make fast progress I get
free pascal going. I'm quite good with Delphi, and they are very
similar.
My bigger concern (over learning the OS) is spending time looking for
programming tools. I assume most of the languages are similar to java,
and I hate that. I think I might be ok with PHP. I need to find (and
install, hehe) programming tools that are more windows like. Free
pascal, being a delphi clone, is a great starting point.
