Have you done all of the upgrades? Have you booted the Live CD and does it
crash on your hardware?

Maybe you want to consider:

1) deleting your settings for Gnome and KDE by deleting the hidden folders
.gnome2 and .kde
2) doing a fresh installation from scratch.
