If you are working from a scratch installation and you have not added much then deleting your settings won't likely help as you say. I wrote that not knowing your situation in detail. I was thinking more of your problem with the disappearing theme than with the crashes.
Keep your system up to date. Report any crashes to Launchpad. You can search there and see if your problem is unique or others have it too. http://launchpad.net/ I am not having the same problems, but that is not to say that you are alone. For me Gwibber does not work in KDE, but it does in GNOME. Also Choqok, the KDE equivalent to Gwibber, does not work at all. It is a minor pain that I put up with. What I find useful in these circumstances is to launch the application in a terminal and it tells me of the source of the problem. In Gwibber I can see that it is a python problem in KDE, but not GNOME. In Choqok, I have no luck so far. Don't give up!
