I had heard the opposite. That is one of the reasons for the removable
faceplate.
The removeable faceplate is purely cosmetic. There is no way to swap out
the drive, even if you detach the faceplate. MS has said on several
occasions that they "may" release an external HD-DVD module down the road
(hellooooo 32X, Sega CD, etc...)
