It makes sense. Bumblebee is one of the best known characters. And I
suspect there will be chase scenes and the like. You don't want a VW for
that. It'll annoy some people, but Transformers is old enough (and has gone
through enough variations) that I don't think the majority of people who
might like the film will complain. Another possibility, I suppose, would
have been to use Jazz instead (nice car, liked pop culture - not yellow
though). Or iirc there was a yellow Lamborghini that could have been
'downgraded' to Camero status - but whose name I don't recall. The fact
that I don't remember it's name suggests that it probably wouldn't have made
for a good significant character.

The name works better with a VW, as you point out. But I can see some good
reasons for changing it.

I don't mind them using a Camaro as main Autobot. Its calling him Bumblebee
that I have a problem. Not out of any attachment to the old Bumblebee, just
because it sounds odd for a Camaro.

On the other hand, it helps to explain why the USAF isn't constantly trying
to intercept Decepticon flights of a half-dozen rogue seeming F-15s (iirc
that's what the six jets were, though it's been a long time).

Good point

It would also presumeably be more difficult and expensive to shoot scenes
with Decepticon jets.

I am disappointed that Megatron isn't a gun anymore. That is one character
that imo would have been better to leave in his original form regardless of
any considerations. If necessary, give him a new larger gun platform mode
as well as his original pistol and robot forms (like Galvatron in the old
movie). But keep him as a gun. Oh well.

Hopefully if Optimus Prime shows up, he'll at least stay a red big rig
truck. And he'll have his original, deep "Voice of God".

Optimus Prime will definitely be a red semi from everything I have heard.
As for the voices, I had heard they were making an effort to get the
surviving original cast for as many characters as possible. Optimus'
original voice is the one people are most adamant about keeping.
