I glanced through a few of the posts on one of the message threads, and apparently the reason given for Bumblebee not being a VW is because Volkswagon doesn't want their name associated with war. i.e. Volkswagon is at least partly to blame. That still doesn't explain why he's a muscle car. But it does put things somewhat in perspective (apparently VW has also forbidden Hasbro from making a Bug Bumblebee for the last several years). Also, the non-gun Megatron is apparently due to Hasbro's need to sell Transformer toys. And we all know about the effects the political climate has had on toy guns of late.
