Great points and I basically agree with them, BUT!...
Remember that a MS with the Gundam name has to look like a Gundam! IIRC,
The Gundam's a symbol to the enemies, so each Gundam must look like a
Gundam.
A Gundam's look shows enemies what's coming at them. They don't at first
know that a rookie[Amuro] is in the Gundam.
Understood or do I need to clarify?

still have got GaoGaiGar and some supporting Turn A design from him
that's
actually excellent. It's just Bandai/Sunrise decision to re-use Okawara
again and again to do the main mecha (gundams) that is causing the
problem.
Which means he's a good commercial artist. He's commercial when
Bandai said: give us another rehash once more all over again, he's
artist when someone (perhaps Tomino) ask him: give us something truly
different. His techniques are good, but needs an art director on his
back to keep up the quality.
I think I wondered about this aloud here before, but would in Japanese (I
spell the whold damn word this time, okay?) culture they'd choose
designer
like Okwara over younger ones due to seniority? i.e. if it's Gundam,
we go
ask Okawara first because he's the original designer; if he's not
doing it
we have someone else do it. I think Tomino expressed several times
that he
got asked again and again to do another Gundam -- sometime he refuse;
sometimes we got lucky and got Turn A; so I wonder if it's a usual
practice.
In general, I think in the recent past, seniority trumps youth and
creativity. But I think in recent years a lot of indy studios have
changed the industry. Gainax and Production I.G. give young artists
room to experiment with their art and put pressure on traditional
studios to innovate.
In Ok's case, I suspect he keeps getting the big jobs because he's
open to repetition and micromanagement, unlike (I'm gussing now)
Tomino and Yas. Just checking on Yas now... he's been out of work in
the anime industry since F91. His mecha work is good if you listen to
fans here, and he's got the seniority, but he's not getting the big
job. I think it's not Bandai/Sunrise imposing any seniority rules,
it's a commercial rule they are using.
No matter you are young or old, traditional or experimental, you just
have to make profits. So Ok keeps cranking out rehash Gundam and
HGUC/MG keeps cranking out conservative models because the accountants
are telling them these are the designs that works.
Do you think there's a small split in sculpture between HGUC/MGUC
models and HG/MG Seed models? Are UC models (even the Zudah) getting
more conservative and Seed models getting more flamboyant?
