So does this mean that no one will remember Evangelion in twenty years?
I kid...
Well you tell me. From what I see, Evangelion isn't totally dead yet,
but only as (1) yet another giant robo design that get revived
periodically from the mecha graveyard and pressganged into Banpresto
duty and (2) a endless fountain of excuse for upskirt, pseudohentai,
illegal-in-several-states products.
How sad it has become, in a way I respect what NGE should have or
could have been: the deepest and most profound metaphysical inquiry
into "Truth" that anime has ever produced up to that point, perhaps
even ever after. But alas, Anno the pervert took Anno the genius into
a dark alley and did unspeakable abuses to him, and we are left with a
poorly made kiddie porn.
As I understand it, those endless Asuka and Rei "ahem" figurines are
what is keeping Gainax afloat. I've heard that Gainax has lost money
on every anime they've done save Eva and Mahoromatic(itself a rather
amazing bit of ecchi fanservice). I gather they aren't very good
business men.
As for Anno the Genius vs. Anno the "ahem" fanboy? I wonder if once
was enough for him? Maybe he doesn't want to be that vulnerable again?
