As I've said previously, NGE amounts to Anno working out his issues with his father. He's done that now, so he literally *can't* do it again. He did it the first time for himself, not the work. Now that it's done, there's nothing left to do. <shrug>

Yep, I saw that after I had sent my post. I'm not used to so many messages on the GML ^_^

I've also heard the Gendo may represent Hayao Miyazaki, whom Anno worked under and highly admired. Miyazaki is a savage perfectionist and nothing Anno did seemed to be good enough for him. After hearing about Miyazaki's public thrashing of his son, this theory gains some credibility in my eyes.
