For making your point, I suppose you could have the Turks (who already are members) or Ukrainians (who want to be members) make the claim. :P
Neither nation is particularly close to the Atlantic.
I think the main thing is that for most English speakers, a "word" consisting largely of vowels doesn't sound quite right. "NATO" works because each syllable is composed of both a vowel and a consenant. SEATO (which included Australia, but not Japan) also follows a similar style. I think the primary problem with AEUG for me is the fact that the first syllable has no consenants. As a result, it sounds strange.
But I suppose that's what happens when you have people who aren't fluent in a language coming up with names for that language. junior
