The term "supporting organization" seemed to change its meaning
with each successive proposal from IANA. In the beginning, they
seemed to be talking about organizations that provided financial
support.
In the olden days, in the middle of 1997 I believe, it looked
like IANA was going to lose its Federal funding. The RIRs got
together and agreed to pay its way. I think that RIPE agreed to
pay $50,000 to IANA as part of this. The three RIRs were the
original "supporting organizations".
As it happened, the US government coughed up another chunk of money
($500K or $1 million) and then we moved into the NTIA/Green Paper/
White Paper/IFWP/GIP era.
