Network solutions registry is considering revoking hundreds of domain
registrations. the "Dash Dot" domains (like 'a-.com') were registered,
apparently due to bug in the registry software. NSI told me the decision
was up to the NSI CEO James Rutt who oversees both the NSI Registry and the
NSI Registrar.

The issue is whether the domains should be revoked because of the error.
The domains work perfectly and some have registered their names more than a
month ago. Some people have already spent money on hosting services and/or
made plans for their domain. I am using http://ip-.com as an alternate URL
for my Network-Tools.com site. the arguments to keep the domain say that
there is no reason to shut down a domain merely because of some arcane rules
that are not always implemented anyway. Others feel the domains should be
deleted because it does not meet the standards. NSI shut down registration
of the domains about 12:45 PM on Monday.

Several people have questioned why this mistake should be corrected while
the races.com error has never been corrected
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,32974,00.html. Others have
pointed to other instances where long domains were registered erroneously
and were allowed to stay registered. To my knowledge there has never been
any mass revocation of domains. NSI registry now just defers questions to
the individual registrar who registered the domain. I have seen Dot Dash
Domains registered by Alabanza, CORE, Namesecure, and Registrars.com.
