Um - gotta ask this, because someone's bound to: it's a list of links.
Why not mark it up as a list? What's the advantage of trying to get a
paragraph to display like a table? (That's the discussion bit...)

Ahh! I should have addressed that one - excellent discussion point.

True, it is a series of links ... dare I say, yes, a list! Now
consider this list of numbers in a page navigation context, in both a
CSS and no-CSS situation.

If the link text had more, um, "text" to it I could see the list
working quite well. As it's just a list of numbers, when I look at an
unstyled bulleted list like this:

* 1
* 2
* 3
* 4
* 5
* 6
* 7
* 8

From my POV, the bullets seem to take over the numbers in terms of
getting my attention, and my knee-jerk reaction is: "Wow, what a waste
of space."

Now compare/contrast with a paragraph and series of #s: "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8"

(More info: In both cases, a header precedes the nav list, so it's not
just a lone list of #s.)

Granted, a lone number is hard enough to point a mouse at (when style
is disabled, there will be no background images). Would the paragraph
form cause grief in other output media though (aural)? Hmm.

Compared to the rest of my unstyled page, the list version (above)
just seems very out of place. Still, perhaps I'm placing too much
weight on the unstyled version?

Good discussion. Keep the rationale coming. I appreciate it.
