Horrible though the span thing is, it does at least leave control of the
layout to the CSS. If you subsequently want to eliminate the spacing,
you just change the {padding-right : 0.5 em} to {padding : 0} and all
the spaces on the site go back to normal. . .
If you can already do what you've just described in PHP, I can't really
help you. I didn't think of the case of Mr. etc - neither can I think of
any intelligent system for finding ends of sentences.
