Yes, it is. You can safely edit this file to contain slashes instead of
dots. You can also delete the file, and re-subscribe to folders with any
client / webmail.
The problems you are experiencing are probably related to the transition
from 1.0 to 1.2, which includes a change of hierarchy delimiter.
