Actually there is no reason for you to go through the mental gymnastics you
are going through. Just consider every 1000 watts as one horsepower. You
get watts by multiplying volts times amps. So a 72 volt system pushing 500
amps is 36 horsepower. Technically 1 horespower is 745 watts, but the 1000
watt figure is easier to do quick calculations with and factors in
electrical losses.
